What are the 12 zodiac dates?

Zodiac, in astronomy and astrology, is a belt encircling the heavens extending 9° on either side of the ecliptic, the plane of Earth’s orbit, and the apparent annual path of the Sun. The orbits of the Moon and principal planets also lie entirely within the zodiac. The 12 astrological signs of the zodiac each occupy 1/12 (or 30°) of its great circle. However, these signs no longer precisely correspond to the astronomical constellations in which the Sun appears. The constellations exhibit irregular sizes and shapes, and the Sun regularly traverses through Ophiuchus, a constellation not traditionally considered part of the zodiac.

The history of the zodiac unveils a rich tapestry of cultural and astronomical evolution. The ancient Greeks, recognizing that many constellations along the ecliptic represented animals, termed this zone zōdiakos kyklos, meaning “circle of animals,” or ta zōdia, “the little animals.” The number and dimensions of zodiacal constellations varied in antiquity and became standardized only with the advancement of mathematical astronomy.

The following list presents the constellations of the zodiac, along with the dates of the Sun’s passage through them during the era when their boundaries were established. Although these dates persist for astrological purposes, the phenomenon of precession of the equinoxes has shifted the constellations eastward. Consequently, for instance, on January 1, the direction of the Sun is now in Sagittarius rather than Capricornus. The origins of the symbols associated with the zodiac signs remain obscure, with their appearance primarily documented in Greek manuscripts from the late Middle Ages.
